Description

Set of six teak dining chairs, designed by H.W. Klein and manufactured in the 1960s by Bramin Møbler, Bramming, Denmark.

These beautiful chairs show the clean lines and elegant silhouette associated with the Danish Modern design movement. They have solid, moulded, teak, organically shaped back rests that join to the chair legs by dowel; the joints are finished with an inlaid rosewood decoration that echos the Bramin dining tables corner joints. The chairs have solid teak, turned, tapering legs and rails. The seats have been newly replaced and are woven, black, danish cord; the original seats would have also been Danish cord.

These refined dining chairs would perfectly complement early and mid-twentieth century, as well as contemporary, interior design schemes.

Whilst these chairs are in great condition, they are vintage, and as such have patination commensurate with their age.

Details

Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein was born in Norway in 1919. After serving in the Norwegian Royal Marines, Klein pivoted to cabinetmaking, and in 1949 he moved to Denmark to study interior design at the Tekniske Skile in Frederikberg where he trained under the eminent Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl. After finishing school in 1952, Klein returned to Norway where he established his own furniture and interiors business, designing and producing dining furniture characteristic of the Danish Modern style. It was in the 1950s that Klein also became interested in making plastic furniture, even designing a new manufacturing method to do so – it was during this time that he began working with the manufacturer Bramin, in order to finance his endeavours. In 1960s Klein, along with his family, moved to Denmark so that he could work full time at Bramin, remaining at the company until its closure in 1980, whereupon the Kleins moved to San Francisco.

Bramin Møbler was a furniture manufacturer, originating from in Bramming, Denmark, a town known for its progressive furniture industry. Originally known as N.A. Jørgensens Møbelfabrik, the company update its name in the late 1950s, to reflect a more contemporary brand image. Producing striking furniture, characteristic of the Danish Modern style, through the mid-twentieth century and into the 1980s, Bramin was one of Denmarks larger furniture makers producing a wide range of furniture for the lounge and dining room, as well as distinctive sideboards and storage options. Bramin collaborated with some of the best designers of the modern era including Johannes Andersen, Hans Olsen, Kurt Østervig, and Frank Reenskaug, but their most successful partnership was with H.W. Klein with whom they worked closely from the 1960s until their closure. Bramin Møbler continued to be successful until the 1980s, when they were forced to close by the international financial crisis of that time. Today Bramins pieces are highly coveted items of furniture, straddling original design with exemplifying principles of the Danish Modern movement; human centred, elegantly simple, furniture, made with good quality materials.
